Programmable Mobility Space(PMS)
- :location / motion state;
- :cabin / physical configuration;
- :attention availability;
- :environmental state;
- :communication / digital continuity;
- :privacy / permission;
- :safety state;
- :network state;
- :current human intent / activity。
Abstract
Transportation systems are conventionally optimized around the physical relocation of people and goods. Even when vehicles include entertainment, communication, work, dining, sleeping, or hospitality features, these capabilities are generally treated as secondary amenities rather than first-class spatial functions.
This paper proposes a broader architecture: the transformation of the transportation device into a Programmable Mobility Space (PMS). In a PMS, transportation remains the hard physical substrate, but the cabin becomes a configurable environment whose utility is jointly determined by movement, attention, privacy, connectivity, comfort, safety, digital continuity, and the rider's current activity.
The paper explicitly rejects the assumption that productivity is the sole goal of such systems. Work, leisure, entertainment, rest, sleep, social interaction, creativity, and idle time are all valid allocations of travel time. The relevant transformation is therefore not "travel time becomes work time" but "travel time becomes user-allocatable time."
AI is not a necessary condition for mobile work or leisure spaces; chauffeured vehicles, business aircraft, mobile computing, displays, communications, and rear-seat entertainment have long demonstrated partial versions of the concept. AI becomes important as an orchestration layer that can adapt multimodal interfaces and environmental configurations to rider role, attention, privacy, safety, network state, and intent.
The paper defines the conceptual state space of programmable mobility, distinguishes transportation value from journey utility, proposes the release of the vehicle cabin from driver-centric geometry as a major consequence of high automation, and positions current robotaxi cabin designs as early industrial evidence rather than as completed realizations of PMS. It then establishes the research program for the remainder of Series B.
- 睡覺;
- 看電影;
- 打遊戲;
- 開會;
- 打電話;
- 看文件;
- 社交;
- 吃東西;
- :distance;
- :travel time;
- :cost;
- :safety;
- :energy;
- :reliability。
傳統交通經濟學常以 value of travel time / value of travel time savings 衡量減少旅程時間的價值。
travel time use 已經成為 activity-travel behaviour 的重要組成,會影響 time-use、mode choice、value of travel time savings 與 travel experience。
3. Travel Time Use 不等於 Multitasking
Transportation → Programmable Mobility Space
- display;
- projection;
- audio;
- lighting;
- temperature;
- seat posture;
- notification;
- privacy;
- communication;
- AI mode;
- work / rest / entertainment mode。
Adaptive Orchestration
- 降低 notification;
- 調整燈光;
- 改變音訊;
- 隱藏工作畫面;
- 保留緊急聯絡;
- 調整座椅;
- 大螢幕;
- 私人音訊;
- AI summary;
- voice dictation;
- network priority;
- document continuity。
Travel Time → User-Allocatable Time
- :work;
- :rest;
- :entertainment;
- :social;
- :creative;
- :idle;
- :forced / unusable。
9. Continuity of Choice
Series A 已建立 communication continuity。
Series B
10. Positive Utility of Travel
- 睡得很好;
- 看一部電影;
- 完成創作;
- 有私人時間;
- 與朋友聊天;
- 看風景;
- 進行高品質工作;
- :activity utility;
- :time cost;
- :discomfort / disruption;
- :space quality;
- :connectivity quality;
- :privacy / personal control。
- 願意搭比較慢但能工作的鐵路;
- 願意付商務艙;
- 願意使用有司機的車;
flexible, premium space for riders to make their own
living room on wheels
13. Zoox:從 Driver-Centric 到 Rider-Centric
- lighting;
- sound;
- temperature;
- touchscreen;
- zoned heating / cooling;
- work presentation;
- social playlist;
- relaxation。
14. Uber / Lucid / Nuro:In-Cabin Experience
in-cabin rider experience
- interactive screens;
- climate;
- heated seats;
- music;
- support;
- pull-over request;
- autonomy visualization。
15. Lucid 更直接提出「work, read, or scenery」
- work;
- read;
- scenery;
Automation Releases Cabin Geometry
因為:
- steering;
- pedals;
- forward visibility;
- mirrors;
- instrument cluster;
- driver reach;
- driver attention。
17. Driverless 不等於 Constraintless
- seat belt;
- crashworthiness;
- evacuation;
- motion sickness;
- emergency communication;
- accessibility;
- child safety;
- fire safety;
- cybersecurity;
18. Mobility Space State
— Locomotion State
- location;
- velocity;
- acceleration;
- route;
- ETA;
- motion regime。
— Cabin Configuration
- seats;
- display;
- acoustic layout;
- storage;
- lighting;
- partition;
- table / desk;
- projection。
— Attention State
- driver;
- passenger;
- sleep;
- focused;
- social;
- emergency。
— Environment State
- light;
- temperature;
- noise;
- air;
- vibration;
- motion comfort。
— Communication Continuity
承接 Series A。
— Privacy / Permission
- audience;
- data class;
- camera;
- microphone;
- local cache;
- teardown。
— Safety State
- automation mode;
- occupant restrictions;
- emergency;
- operational design domain。
— Network State
- bandwidth;
- latency;
- available paths;
- offline / degraded。
— Intent / Activity
- work;
- rest;
- entertainment;
- social;
- creative;
- idle。
19. Programmable Mobility Space
robotaxi:
- table;
- screen;
- sleep;
- food;
- work;
- entertainment。
Business aviation
- 昂貴;
- 少數人使用;
- 不具普及性;
- 數位連續性不足;
- 不具 adaptive orchestration。
Series B
24. Mobility Space as a Service
- pickup;
- movement;
- arrival。
PMS 進一步:
賣:
- movement;
- time;
- privacy;
- comfort;
- activity support;
- digital continuity;
- configurable experience。
- Quiet;
- Work;
- Social;
- Entertainment;
- Family;
- Accessibility;
- Rest。
27. PMS Maturity Levels
PMS-L0 — Transport-Dominant
PMS-L1 — Connected Cabin
PMS-L2 — Activity-Support Cabin
明確支援 work / rest / entertainment / social activity。
PMS-L3 — Adaptive Multimodal Cabin
PMS-L4 — Programmable Mobility Space
Enablement Axis
PMS 的 enablement vector:
30. Safety Dominates Optimization
任何 PMS objective:
都必須 subject to:
Safety 是 hard constraint。
Surface
- attention;
- privacy;
- display;
- audio;
- input;
- notification;
- camera;
- permission。
- ANC;
- beamforming;
- directional audio;
- microphone zoning;
- sound masking;
- cabin partition。
- foldable display;
- windshield display;
- ceiling display;
- projection;
- AR;
- personal wearable display。
34. Environment 也是 Compute Output
- light;
- temperature;
- seat;
- sound;
- privacy glass;
- display;
- air;
35. Series A 的位置
36. PMS 與 Series A 的接口
- identity;
- session;
- task;
- memory;
- artifact;
- agent;
- authority;
- communication;
- network state。
於是:
Activity Reset
Office
→ Vehicle
→ Airport
→ Aircraft
→ Destination
Same Work
Same Entertainment
Same Conversation
Same Story
Same Social Session
Same Rest Intent
38. Same Activity ≠ Same Interface
Intent
- 不推 work;
- 不自動打開 task;
- 不用 productivity notification;
41. Time Reclamation 與 Time Capture 必須分開
42. Autonomous Vehicle
2026 年 Transportation Research Part C 的 shared automated vehicle field experiment 已直接觀察 work / leisure travel-time use。
Productivity Max
subject to:
45. Motion Sickness
- 細小文字閱讀;
- VR;
- 高視覺負荷;
- backwards seating;
- screen focus;
46. Mobility Space Profile
Work Profile
- high visual;
- private audio;
- strong connectivity;
- low interruption。
Rest Profile
- low light;
- low notification;
- reclined;
- low interaction。
Social Profile
- shared audio;
- face-to-face;
- shared display。
Entertainment Profile
- immersive audio;
- visual display;
- optional game input。
47. Profile
48. Fleet
Robotaxi fleet
- sedan;
- SUV;
- van。
- Basic;
- Quiet;
- Work;
- Family;
- Social;
- Premium;
- Accessible。
49. Mobility Hospitality
Hospitality
Journey utility
- 大尺度地理;
- 高汽車依賴;
- 跨城/跨州移動;
- business aviation;
- long commute;
- suburban form。
52. Distance Remains, Friction Changes
53. Destination
- review;
- call;
- analysis;
- entertainment;
- sleep;
- physical presence;
- social trust;
- site inspection;
- ritual;
- signing;
- face-to-face interaction;
- place-specific experience。
因此:
- call;
- decompression;
- private media;
- confidential work;
- personal AI;
Privacy Teardown
- cache;
- microphone;
- camera;
- display history;
- Bluetooth;
- account;
- voice history。
Surveillance
PMS 想知道:
- temperature preference;
- lighting;
- activity;
- music;
- seat;
- privacy;
Waymo 2026 年的 Gemini in Waymo 已明確說明其 conversational assistant 與 Waymo Driver 分離。
- climate;
- media;
- information;
- support intent。
58. Series B
59. Driver Mode 與 Passenger Mode
- robotaxi;
- premium taxi;
- chauffeur;
- corporate fleet;
- airport shuttle;
- long-distance coach;
- autonomous shuttle;
- business aviation;
- rail premium cabin。
- :transport;
- :space;
- :activity enablement;
- :continuity;
- :privacy / personalization;
- :hospitality / comfort。
62. Transport
- safety;
- uptime;
- route;
- ETA;
- pickup;
- accessibility;
- cost。
因此:
- acceleration;
- braking;
- turning;
- network handoff;
- vibration;
- changing privacy context;
- changing geography;
- route events。
64. Motion-Aware Interface
65. Geo-Aware Experience
- 景點;
- commerce;
- meeting arrival;
- route briefing;
- local information;
- language;
- weather。
66. Arrival Transition
Desktop work
→ enter vehicle
→ voice continuation
→ arrival
→ restore visual workspace
67. Departure Transition
- identity;
- scope;
- device trust;
- ride ownership;
- privacy mode。
68. Public / Shared Space Context
- display;
- TTS;
- microphone;
- AI memory recall;
- notification。
69. Multi-Occupant Conflict
- 一人想睡;
- 一人想開會;
- headrest audio;
- directional sound;
- wearable audio;
- local display;
- privacy glass;
- seat orientation;
- beamformed microphone。
所以:
71. Experience Compiler
REST(40min)
lighting = low
seat = reclined
notifications = emergency_only
audio = quiet
display = off
temperature = personal_profile
這與 Series A 的 Projection Planner 相似,但輸出從 digital UI 擴張到 physical environment。
Experience Compiler
- capability registry;
- device driver;
- safety policy;
- vehicle API;
- physical constraints。
因此:
不是:
Human Choice
B-01
PMS 總論。
B-02
Travel-Time Reclamation、time use、temporal rebound。
B-03
Mobility Cognitive Continuity。
B-04
Spatial Attention Zones。
B-05
AI-Native Vehicle Cabin。
B-06

- work;
- leisure;
- rest;
- time capture;
- labour rebound;
- welfare;
- congestion second-order effects。
- task;
- entertainment;
- social;
- rest;
- context;
- handoff;
- arrival / departure。
- attention;
- safety;
- privacy;
- sound;
- display;
- authority。
- service tiers;
- fleet economics;
- cabin profiles;
- robotaxi differentiation;
- journey as product。
- Surface;
- Zone;
- Experience Compiler;
- Activity State;
- Safety Contract;
- Privacy;
- Connectivity;
- Series A bridge;
- fleet / service interface。
- communication state;
- surface attach;
- authority;
- network;
- modality;
- privacy;
- longer but better journey
- 所有人都喜歡在交通中工作;
- 自動駕駛一定讓人更有效率;
- robotaxi 一定取代私人汽車;
- 車艙一定要變辦公室;
- AI 是 PMS 的必要條件;
- 現有 Waymo / Zoox 已經等於完整 PMS;
- 旅程效用提高就代表塞車無害;
- 交通時間沒有機會成本;
- 全部 attention 都可以被回收;
- luxury feature 會自動普及;
- 共享車艙能天然提供私人空間;
- 高度個人化可以忽略資料主權;
- Series A 可直接控制 driving stack;
- automation level 等於 PMS maturity level。

- communication;
- work;
- entertainment;
- rest;
- social interaction;
- creative activity;
- sleep;
- idle time;
