Scope: Nick Bostrom’s 2003 Simulation Argument, conditional inference, observer-counting, future premises, epistemic level separation, and the boundary between formal validity and ontological claim

  1. 人類類文明幾乎都在到達 posthuman stage 前滅亡;
  2. 能到達 posthuman stage 的文明幾乎都不大量執行 ancestor simulations;

ConjectureFormal ConsequenceEmpirical SupportFuture ActualityOntological Truth.\boxed{ \text{Conjecture} \neq \text{Formal Consequence} \neq \text{Empirical Support} \neq \text{Future Actuality} \neq \text{Ontological Truth}. }

Epistemic Level Separation Principle, ELSP

若模型 MM 在前提集合 A\mathcal A 下推出結論 QQ

M,AQ,M,\mathcal A\vdash Q,

Q is conditionally entailed by M,A.\boxed{ Q\text{ is conditionally entailed by }M,\mathcal A. }

WA,\mathcal W\models\mathcal A,

WQ,\mathcal W\models Q,

  • posthuman civilization 是否出現;
  • consciousness 是否具有足夠 substrate independence;
  • ancestor simulation 是否具備可行性與實際誘因;
  • posthuman civilization 是否大量執行它;
  • observer/reference class 應如何定義;

valid mathematicsvalidated world-model.\boxed{ \text{valid mathematics} \neq \text{validated world-model}. }

而:

strong conditional argumentverified ontology.\boxed{ \text{strong conditional argument} \neq \text{verified ontology}. }

Bostrom 2003 = bad argument.\boxed{ \text{Bostrom 2003 = bad argument}. }

simulation hypothesis = impossible.\boxed{ \text{simulation hypothesis = impossible}. }

這個 argument 的 epistemic jurisdiction 到哪裡?\boxed{ \text{這個 argument 的 epistemic jurisdiction 到哪裡?} }

D=文明在 posthuman stage 前幾乎都滅亡,D = \text{文明在 posthuman stage 前幾乎都滅亡}, A=posthuman civilizations 幾乎都不大量跑 ancestor simulations,A = \text{posthuman civilizations 幾乎都不大量跑 ancestor simulations}, S=我們身處 simulation.S = \text{我們身處 simulation}.

Bostrom

DAShigh\boxed{ D\lor A\lor S_{\mathrm{high}} }

其中:

ShighS_{\mathrm{high}}

Bostrom

DAS\boxed{ D\lor A\lor S }

accept the Simulation Argument\boxed{ \text{accept the Simulation Argument} }

同時:

reject a high credence in the Simulation Hypothesis.\boxed{ \text{reject a high credence in the Simulation Hypothesis}. }

N\overline N

H\overline H

fsim=fPNHfPNH+H.f_{\mathrm{sim}} = \frac{ f_P\overline N\overline H }{ f_P\overline N\overline H+\overline H }.

約去 H\overline H

fsim=fPNfPN+1.\boxed{ f_{\mathrm{sim}} = \frac{ f_P\overline N }{ f_P\overline N+1 }. }

只要:

fPN1,f_P\overline N\gg1,

便有:

fsim1.f_{\mathrm{sim}}\rightarrow1.

fP,N 在現實中到底應該是多少?\boxed{ f_P,\overline N \text{ 在現實中到底應該是多少?} }

fP=102f_P=10^{-2}

而:

N=106.\overline N=10^6.

則:

fPN=104,f_P\overline N=10^4,

所以:

fsim1000010001.f_{\mathrm{sim}} \approx \frac{10000}{10001}.

conditional parameters\boxed{ \text{conditional parameters} }

變成:

future facts.\boxed{ \text{future facts}. }

Mathematical Truth

如果:

x>0x>0

且:

N,N\rightarrow\infty,

那:

xNxN+11.\frac{xN}{xN+1}\rightarrow1.

E0=Formal / Mathematical Validity.\boxed{ E_0=\text{Formal / Mathematical Validity}. }

但:

E0E_0

Model Validity

MSA.M_{\mathrm{SA}}.

  • posthuman civilizations 可以存在;
  • conscious simulations 可行;
  • ancestor simulations 可以大量執行;
  • observer counting 適用;

MSAQSA.M_{\mathrm{SA}} \vdash Q_{\mathrm{SA}}.

E1=Model-Conditional Validity.\boxed{ E_1=\text{Model-Conditional Validity}. }

world verification.\boxed{ \text{world verification}. }

Empirical Grounding

MSAM_{\mathrm{SA}}

WMSA.\mathcal W \approx M_{\mathrm{SA}}.

例如:

  • civilization survival data;
  • computational scaling;
  • theory of consciousness;
  • actual future preferences;
  • physical resource limits;
  • actual simulation practices。

我們尚未觀察到的 future civilizations.\boxed{ \text{我們尚未觀察到的 future civilizations}. }

Future Actuality

F=future fact.\boxed{ F=\text{future fact}. }

P(FM,Dt),P(F\mid M,D_t),

其中:

  • MM:當前模型;

Dt+1,D_{t+1},

P(FM,Dt+1)P(FM,Dt).P(F\mid M,D_{t+1}) \neq P(F\mid M,D_t).

Ontological Truth

O=Reality itself has structure R.O= \text{Reality itself has structure }R.

例如:

我們實際上就是 ancestor simulation.\boxed{ \text{我們實際上就是 ancestor simulation}. }

formal consequence.\boxed{ \text{formal consequence}. }

所以:

Mathematical PossibilityPhysical PossibilityFuture ActualityOntological Actuality.\boxed{ \text{Mathematical Possibility} \neq \text{Physical Possibility} \neq \text{Future Actuality} \neq \text{Ontological Actuality}. }

11. Epistemic Level Separation Principle

ELSP: Epistemic Level Separation Principle.\boxed{ \text{ELSP: Epistemic Level Separation Principle}. }

若:

M,AQ,M,\mathcal A\vdash Q,

WQ.\mathcal W\models Q.

G(M,W,A)\boxed{ G(M,\mathcal W,\mathcal A) }

即 grounding relation。

proof inside model+model-world groundingworld-level warrant.\boxed{ \text{proof inside model} + \text{model-world grounding} \rightarrow \text{world-level warrant}. }

formal validity\text{formal validity}

W\mathcal W

的 representation。

因此:

MW.M\neq\mathcal W.

即使:

MM

there exists a coherent described structure.\boxed{ \text{there exists a coherent described structure}. }

the actual world instantiates it.\boxed{ \text{the actual world instantiates it}. }

A\mathcal A

中:

AT\mathcal A\vdash T

WA\boxed{ \mathcal W\models\mathcal A }

或:

A 是否是描述 W 的好模型.\boxed{ \mathcal A \text{ 是否是描述 }\mathcal W\text{ 的好模型}. }

因此:

Mathematical theorem stabilityWorld-model stability.\boxed{ \text{Mathematical theorem stability} \neq \text{World-model stability}. }

14. Newtonian Case

Newtonian mechanics

Newtonian mechanics works\boxed{ \text{Newtonian mechanics works} }

Newtonian structure exhausts all physical reality.\boxed{ \text{Newtonian structure exhausts all physical reality}. }

F=maF=ma

domain restriction.\boxed{ \text{domain restriction}. }

15. Simulation Argument 的 Future Premise Problem

Simulation Argument

future.\boxed{ \text{future}. }

例如:

P(posthuman civilization exists).P( \text{posthuman civilization exists} ). P(mass ancestor simulationposthuman).P( \text{mass ancestor simulation} \mid \text{posthuman} ).

future extrapolation\boxed{ \text{future extrapolation} }

16. Future Extrapolation

不能預測未來.\boxed{ \text{不能預測未來}. }

而是:

不能把預測的 model output 改名為 future fact.\boxed{ \text{不能把預測的 model output 改名為 future fact}. }

Under assumptions A1,,An, future F becomes plausible.\boxed{ \text{Under assumptions }A_1,\ldots,A_n, \text{ future }F\text{ becomes plausible}. }

F is mathematically inevitable.\boxed{ F\text{ is mathematically inevitable}. }

FtFt+1.\boxed{ F_t\neq F_{t+1}. }

  • technology;
  • preferences;
  • institutions;
  • substrates;
  • reproduction;
  • cognition;
  • concepts of identity;
  • relation to computation。

因此:

future state uncertainty+future transition-law uncertainty.\boxed{ \text{future state uncertainty} + \text{future transition-law uncertainty}. }

Ωt.\Omega_t.

到了 posthuman stage:

Ωt+n\Omega_{t+n}

ΩtΩt+n.\boxed{ \Omega_t\neq\Omega_{t+n}. }

CpostMhuman\boxed{ C_{\mathrm{post}} \notin \mathcal M_{\mathrm{human}} }

P(ancestor simulationCpost).P( \text{ancestor simulation} \mid C_{\mathrm{post}} ).

higher uncertainty.\boxed{ \text{higher uncertainty}. }

不是:

P(mass simulation)1.\boxed{ P(\text{mass simulation})\rightarrow1. }

20. Epistemic Symmetry Requirement

ESR: Epistemic Symmetry Requirement.\boxed{ \text{ESR: Epistemic Symmetry Requirement}. }

future civilization is unknowable,\text{future civilization is unknowable},

future civilization will predictably run enormous simulations.\text{future civilization will predictably run enormous simulations}.

Simulation Argument

appropriate computational organization can support consciousness.\boxed{ \text{appropriate computational organization can support consciousness}. }

若:

simulation\text{simulation}

只產生 behaviorally convincing zombies,

subjective observer experience,\text{subjective observer experience},

則 observer count:

NsimN_{\mathrm{sim}}

computational simulationautomatically conscious simulation.\boxed{ \text{computational simulation} \neq \text{automatically conscious simulation}. }

22. Consciousness Premise 的層級

Cs=P(consciousnessappropriate simulation).C_s= P( \text{consciousness} \mid \text{appropriate simulation} ).

若:

Cs1,C_s\approx1,

Simulation Argument observer multiplier 強。

若:

Cs0,C_s\approx0,

則:

Nconscious simN_{\mathrm{conscious\ sim}}

fsim=f(fP,N,Cs,RC,),f_{\mathrm{sim}} = f( f_P, \overline N, C_s, R_C, \ldots ),

其中:

RCR_C

代表 reference-class assumptions。

23. Reference Class

  • biological humans;
  • uploads;
  • AIs;
  • reconstructed ancestors;
  • partial minds;
  • alien minds;
  • observer-moments。

observer like us?\boxed{ \text{observer like us}? }

不同 reference class:

R1,R2\mathcal R_1,\mathcal R_2

P(SRi).P(S\mid\mathcal R_i).

所以:

observer counting\boxed{ \text{observer counting} }

24. Bland Indifference Principle

P(SE,R)NS,E,RNS,E,R+NB,E,R.P(S\mid E,\mathcal R) \approx \frac{ N_{S,E,\mathcal R} }{ N_{S,E,\mathcal R} + N_{B,E,\mathcal R} }.

self-locating inference rule.\boxed{ \text{self-locating inference rule}. }

25. Probability of Hypothesis 與 Frequency of Simulated Observers

fsimf_{\mathrm{sim}}

P(I am simulatedE)P( \text{I am simulated} \mid E )

fsimP(S)\boxed{ f_{\mathrm{sim}} \rightarrow P(S) }

並不是單純 identity;

N=1030.\overline N=10^{30}.

103010^{30}

P(N=1030 in reality).P( \overline N=10^{30} \text{ in reality} ).

所以:

Magnitude amplifies implication, not premise warrant.\boxed{ \text{Magnitude amplifies implication, not premise warrant}. }

future computing could be huge\text{future computing could be huge}

變成:

future civilizations will run huge ancestor simulations.\text{future civilizations will run huge ancestor simulations}.

there will be vastly more simulated observers.\text{there will be vastly more simulated observers}.

we are almost certainly simulated.\text{we are almost certainly simulated}.

science proved reality is simulation.\boxed{ \text{science proved reality is simulation}. }

Epistemic Inflation Chain.\boxed{ \text{Epistemic Inflation Chain}. }

28. Epistemic Inflation

EIF:HMPFO.\boxed{ \mathsf{EIF} : H \rightarrow M \rightarrow P \rightarrow F \rightarrow O. }

其中:

  • HH:hypothesis;
  • MM:formal model;
  • PP:plausible consequence;
  • FF:treated-as-fact;
  • OO:ontological absolutization。

HMH\rightarrow M

或:

MP.M\rightarrow P.

Bostrom mathematically proved that we probably live in a simulation.

Bostrom’s exact academic claim.\boxed{ \text{Bostrom's exact academic claim}. }

must be separately attributed.\boxed{ \text{must be separately attributed}. }

Bostrom

  • argument 本身基本 sound;
  • 它只顯示三個 disjunct 至少一個成立;
  • 他不認為我們對三項任一有 very strong evidence;
  • 他給 simulation hypothesis substantial probability;

作者明確做出的條件式三難.\boxed{ \text{作者明確做出的條件式三難}. }

而是:

由條件式三難到已驗證本體論的非授權跳躍.\boxed{ \text{由條件式三難到已驗證本體論的非授權跳躍}. }

31. Simulation Argument

P(reach posthuman)P(\text{reach posthuman})

P(mass ancestor simulationposthuman)P(\text{mass ancestor simulation}\mid\text{posthuman})

N,\overline N,

那:

non-simulated human-like observers become a small minority.\boxed{ \text{non-simulated human-like observers become a small minority}. }

Credence

S=1.\boxed{ S=1. }

而是:

P(D)+P(A)+P(S)\boxed{ P(D)+P(A)+P(S) }

A strong conditional theorem is valuable even when its antecedents remain uncertain.\boxed{ \text{A strong conditional theorem is valuable even when its antecedents remain uncertain}. }

AB.A\Rightarrow B.

知道:

ABA\Rightarrow B

34. Conjecture

H.\boxed{ H. }

  • 非常有洞察;
  • 非常 plausible;
  • 非常值得研究;

established fact.\boxed{ \text{established fact}. }

Future Revisability

對 empirical world-model:

Mt,M_t,

P(MtDt)1.P(M_t\mid D_t)\approx1.

Dt+1D_{t+1}

MtMt+1.M_t\rightarrow M_{t+1}.

因此:

high present confidenceguaranteed final ontology.\boxed{ \text{high present confidence} \neq \text{guaranteed final ontology}. }

successful modelbroader replacement / restriction.\text{successful model} \rightarrow \text{broader replacement / restriction}.

Radical Skepticism

fallibilismnihilism.\boxed{ \text{fallibilism} \neq \text{nihilism}. }

P(HD)P(H\mid D)

P1P\approx1

metaphysically unrevisable certainty.\boxed{ \text{metaphysically unrevisable certainty}. }

37. Evidence Ladder

L0=Conceptual PossibilityL_0=\text{Conceptual Possibility} L1=Formal ConsistencyL_1=\text{Formal Consistency} L2=Conditional DeductionL_2=\text{Conditional Deduction} L3=Empirical PlausibilityL_3=\text{Empirical Plausibility} L4=Repeated Empirical SupportL_4=\text{Repeated Empirical Support} L5=Strong Causal ModelL_5=\text{Strong Causal Model} L6=Ontological InterpretationL_6=\text{Ontological Interpretation}

注意:

L2⇏L6.\boxed{ L_2\not\Rightarrow L_6. }

L5⇏unrevisable metaphysical finality.\boxed{ L_5\not\Rightarrow \text{unrevisable metaphysical finality}. }

38. Simulation Argument

L2=strong conditional deduction.\boxed{ L_2=\text{strong conditional deduction}. }

其若干 technology assumptions:

L3=plausibility arguments.\boxed{ L_3=\text{plausibility arguments}. }

而:

我們真的身處 simulation\boxed{ \text{我們真的身處 simulation} }

L4/L5L_4/L_5

級 empirical conclusion。

39. 「Simulation Theory」

Simulation Argument\text{Simulation Argument}

Simulation Theory.\text{Simulation Theory}.

  • General Relativity;
  • Evolutionary Theory;
  • Germ Theory

philosophical probability / self-location argument.\boxed{ \text{philosophical probability / self-location argument}. }

HS=we are simulated.H_S= \text{we are simulated}.

而:

AS=the argument establishing the trilemma.A_S= \text{the argument establishing the trilemma}.

所以:

AS sound⇏HS certainly true.\boxed{ A_S\text{ sound} \not\Rightarrow H_S\text{ certainly true}. }

posthuman civilizations cannot exist.\boxed{ \text{posthuman civilizations cannot exist}. }

相反:

posthuman\text{posthuman}

scenario variablefuture observed entity.\boxed{ \text{scenario variable} \neq \text{future observed entity}. }

possible futures.\text{possible futures}.

例如:

P(FiAj).P(F_i\mid A_j).

F={F1,F2,,Fn}.\mathcal F= \{F_1,F_2,\ldots,F_n\}.

future scenariofuture actuality\boxed{ \text{future scenario} \rightarrow \text{future actuality} }

如果前提成立,哪些結論逃不掉?\boxed{ \text{如果前提成立,哪些結論逃不掉?} }

所以:

ABCQA\land B\land C \Rightarrow Q

Which physically possible future will history actualize?\boxed{ \text{Which physically possible future will history actualize?} }

Which coherent ontology is the ontology of this world?\boxed{ \text{Which coherent ontology is the ontology of this world?} }

  • empirical observation;
  • causal inference;
  • theory choice;

45. Mathematical Non-Usurpation

Mathematical Non-Usurpation Principle.\boxed{ \text{Mathematical Non-Usurpation Principle}. }

MQ⇏WQ.\boxed{ M\models Q \not\Rightarrow \mathcal W\models Q. }

以及:

formal inevitability inside a modelhistorical inevitability outside it.\boxed{ \text{formal inevitability inside a model} \neq \text{historical inevitability outside it}. }

conditional philosophical result.\boxed{ \text{conditional philosophical result}. }

  • future civilization probability;
  • simulation motives;
  • consciousness;
  • reference class;
  • world-model applicability

ultimate creator exists.\boxed{ \text{ultimate creator exists}. }

因為:

simulator\text{simulator}

H — Hypothesis

HH

M — Model

M(H)M(H)

D — Deduction

MQM\vdash Q

E — Evidence

DempD_{\mathrm{emp}}

F — Future Projection

P(FM,Demp)P(F\mid M,D_{\mathrm{emp}})

O — Ontological Interpretation

O(F,W).O(F,\mathcal W).

H=M=D=E=F=O.H=M=D=E=F=O.

50. Paper 01

Proposition 1 — Conditionality

Simulation Argument is primarily a conditional trilemma, not a direct empirical measurement of our world’s substrate.\boxed{ \text{Simulation Argument is primarily a conditional trilemma, not a direct empirical measurement of our world's substrate}. }

Proposition 2 — Model/World Separation

MQ⇏WQ.\boxed{ M\models Q \not\Rightarrow \mathcal W\models Q. }

Proposition 3 — Future Premise Uncertainty

unknown future behavior cannot be silently promoted into fixed model parameters.\boxed{ \text{unknown future behavior cannot be silently promoted into fixed model parameters}. }

Proposition 4 — Epistemic Symmetry

Proposition 5 — Magnitude Non-Authority

large numerical consequences amplify accepted premises; they do not validate the premises.\boxed{ \text{large numerical consequences amplify accepted premises; they do not validate the premises}. }

Proposition 6 — Ontological Non-Escalation

formal or statistical support does not by itself authorize final ontological interpretation.\boxed{ \text{formal or statistical support does not by itself authorize final ontological interpretation}. }

51. Internal Seal

Simulation Argument

conditional observer-counting tension.\boxed{ \text{conditional observer-counting tension}. }

ConjectureModelConditional Result\boxed{ \text{Conjecture} \rightarrow \text{Model} \rightarrow \text{Conditional Result} }

ConjectureMathematicsReality Proven.\boxed{ \text{Conjecture} \rightarrow \text{Mathematics} \rightarrow \text{Reality Proven}. }

因此:

Do not weaken the argument by exaggerating its conclusion.\boxed{ \text{Do not weaken the argument by exaggerating its conclusion.} }

以及:

Do not turn conditional mathematics into unearned ontology.\boxed{ \text{Do not turn conditional mathematics into unearned ontology.} }

如果 posthuman civilization 能模擬我們, 那麼誰保證 posthuman civilization 自己不是另一層世界中的有限存在?\boxed{ \text{如果 posthuman civilization 能模擬我們, 那麼誰保證 posthuman civilization 自己不是另一層世界中的有限存在?} }

Downward TranscendenceOntological Terminality.\boxed{ \text{Downward Transcendence} \neq \text{Ontological Terminality}. }

  3. Bostrom’s original paper explicitly frames the conclusion as a disjunction among three propositions and develops the observer-counting fraction using the survival fraction of human-level civilizations and the expected number of ancestor simulations.
  4. In the 2025 FAQ, Bostrom states that accepting the argument does not require accepting the simulation hypothesis, says he assigns the latter a “substantial probability,” and declines to assign a precise numerical probability because this could suggest false precision.
  5. The argument relies on self-locating / observer-selection reasoning and treats substrate independence as an important preliminary assumption.
